Origin Story
As kids, our parents taught us an invaluable lesson: Life is about service to others. Our father demonstrated this by co-founding ASC (Athletes Serving the Community). This innovative, award-winning nonprofit united student athletes in service across Greater Boston.
Santa Barbara Hustlers
Upon moving to Santa Barbara, we decided to follow in his footsteps. Starting with his core concept, we leveraged decades of our own experience playing and coaching team sports, while injecting an innate zest for disruption and innovation.
Thus, SB Hustlers was born — a playful, powerful approach to community service. Our hope was that uniting citizens as a team of volunteers across our town would turn life into a game we could all play together.
In 2014, we launched our social experiment at the Earth Day Festival with a flip chart and a Coors Light tent (sadly, no beer). Over a single weekend, we turned more than 100 strangers into teammates. Our community service team was ready to play! Now what?
In the Field
Our first volunteer event was the SB Food Bank’s “Fork and Cork” gala. The goal was to raise money and awareness for local kids food programs. We emailed our list, and exactly one person joined us! The three of us set up chairs, greeted guests, and preached food security issues as if we were part of the Food Bank Team ourselves. We had a blast!
Word about Hustlers soon spread. We quickly found ourselves at the center of community service in our town. With an inclusive environment and playful spirit, we recruited hundreds of caring citizens to serve thousands of hours, raising millions of dollars for worthy causes across Santa Barbara - from youth education, environmental activism, girls empowerment, human rights, the arts, mental health, and consciousness.
ONE Team
